Linus Torvalds - Linux Creator

Although he may not be a household name, Forbes magazine calls Linux's creator Linus Torvalds, "...perhaps the most popular programmer on the planet."

Among Internet disciples, his renown is clear: a Web search engine returns more than 3.2 million hits when Linus Torvalds is the keyword.

Besides the search engine returns, why does Forbes magazine hold Linus Torvalds in such high esteem?

Why did they not choose Richard Brodie, the lead creator of Microsoft Word or Tim Berners-Lee, the co-creator of the World Wide Web?

Would you choose Linus Torvalds as the greatest programmer? If so, why?

If not, who would you choose? Why?

In your blog, discuss the following:
  • Linus Torvalds' background:
    • Does he have any college degrees? If so, in what field(s)?
    • How long has he been a programmer?
    •
  • Linus Torvalds' program:
    • What is Linux?
    • When was it created?
    • Who uses Linux?
    • How does Linux differ from Windows or MAC Operating Systems? What are the advantages / disadvantages of the Linux program?
