Linus Torvalds - Linux Creator

Although he may not be a household name, Forbes magazine calls Linux's creator Linus Torvalds, "...perhaps the most popular programmer on the planet."

Among Internet disciples, his renown is clear: a Web search engine returns more than 3.2 million hits when Linus Torvalds is the keyword.

Besides the search engine returns, why does Forbes magazine hold Linus Torvalds in such high esteem?

Why did they not choose Richard Brodie, the lead creator of Microsoft Word or Tim Berners-Lee, the co-creator of the World Wide Web?

Would you choose Linus Torvalds as the greatest programmer? If so, why?

If not, who would you choose? Why?

In your blog, discuss the following:
  • Linus Torvalds' background:
    • Does he have any college degrees? If so, in what field(s)?
    • How long has he been a programmer?
    •
  • Linus Torvalds' program:
    • What is Linux?
    • When was it created?
    • Who uses Linux?
    • How does Linux differ from Windows or MAC Operating Systems? What are the advantages / disadvantages of the Linux program?

    1. Your blog was very informative. You clearly did your research. After reading other peoples articles and doing my own research, I find Linus Torvalds very amazing. The things he invented, to me, are mind blowing. Personally, I am not a big "tech" guy and I get lost in all these computer terms so it really is pretty crazy to me to think about how someone like Linus was able to create what he did!

    1. After reading your blog I noticed how we both pointed out a couple things that were similar. It was interesting to notice how you found the article that Forbes Magazine published. I found another article that mentioned how they felt he was the greatest programmer on the planet. The article is called "For the Love of Hacking". It was pretty interesting to read their view and why they put him in such high esteem. Another point you made and I thought was important is how you listed some of the devices that are Linux-based. That is why in my blog I also mentioned some devices. So I think you did a good job on the information you posted.

    2. thank you and i checked out that article "For the love of Hacking" and i liked a lot of the points they made i liked it when they talked about how when linux first started out it had 5-10 users than acouple years later it had millions. I thought it was important to post the devices that are linux based because people don't realize how many times they use linux OS without even noticing it.

    3. Nice blog! I'm still pretty new to all this social media stuff. I have a Facebook but that is about it. This my first blogger account. It's pretty interesting to see all the things we can do with on the internet now whether it's social media sites, information sites, and whatever it is you choose to look up. I'm very thankful for all the internet has to offer. It's very fascinating that basically, any bit of information we'd like to know is just one click away!

    1. In my mind your post is very similar to mine. We both talk about how the Linux was created and how it has changed the way of programming. One thing you talk about is that you don't think that one person is the "Greatest" because there are so many different programmers who have done a ton of different things to contribute to the programming world. I really like how you listed some of the greatest and saying what they have done and contributed to the programming world, i thought it was very interesting.

    1. I understand what you said about how it's unfair to say one person is "the greatest". There are other programmers whose accomplishments should get alot of credit also. But I did find the article in Forbes Magazine interesting to read why they thought the creator of Linux was the greatest programmer on the planet. The article had some good views as to why they feel that way. If you get a chance you should take a look at it.

    1. Very well written post! It was very informative and had of a lot the same points as mine did. I liked how it was stated about the computer he bought and the processors that came in it and everything. You talked about criticism. I kinda of got lost when i was reading it about the criticism because I didn't know how it related to the topic. But it was very well written and it had very good points, and was good to read.

    1. This was a pretty interesting post. I liked the flow of it, and the factual information. We both had the same idea with talking about whose the best. You talked about the variations of Linux and what they all do which was good. It was very informative and you explained everything very well. You related it to present day items with Linux like the android phone and many other items, very informative

    1. I really liked how you broke it down into sections and talked thoroughly about the subjects. This was also a very well written post. I also chose Torvald as the best programmer and we both had a lot of the same ideas as in why he was the best. I think you could've stated a little more about Torvalds early years and how he started with programming. But overall i really enjoyed reading this and seeing other ideas about programming.

    1. Your post about Linus Torvalds was very good and it has a lot of good information. I thought you could have talked a little about what Forbes Magazine said about Torvalds. In the article, "King of Geeks Linus Torvalds Defends His Right to Code in His Bathroom and Curse at The Developers", they called him "The King of Geeks". I also found an article from Forbes Magazine called "For the Love of Hacking" where they felt he was the best programmer on the planet. Other than that I really liked the layout and information that you posted.

    1. I thought your post was interesting to read. On thing I thought you could have written a little more about is who uses Linux and how there are hundreds of devices that are Linux-based such as tv's, smartphones, and notebooks, just to name a few. That information would give readers a little more information about what devices are Linux based. Other than that I though you did a good job on your post and the information you provided.

    1. Hi! I'm not sure if we are supposed to comment strictly on what each classmate wrote in their blogs or just write whatever we are feeling. So instead of writing the same blog over and over again, I'm just going to talk about what seems interesting to me and what I find "blog worthy". I think it would just be too repetitive to talk about the comment on 5 other classmates blogs saying the exact same thing. So I guess I'm choosing to write about what I want to write about.

    1. I found your post interesting especially when you mentioned that there are some programs that work with windows operating system that don't work on Linux operating system. That brought me to wonder which laptops had either Linux or Windows OS. So I did some investigating and found an article posted on zdnet that said according to Amazon the best selling and most popular laptop isn't a Windows PC or MAC but the Linux-based Chromebook. I also should mention your layout and picture looks coool.

    1. Hello! Our blogs had a lot similarities to them. I think Linus was a very interesting man. And his version of Pac Man sounds pretty cool! He seems like a very smart guy. To be the kind of engineer and create the things he did is so amazing. He really is a man worth researching. Especially when so now know how much he impacts all of our daily lives!

    1. Hello! During my research, I had no shortage of facts I could find on Linus Torvalds. His name popped up before I even finished typing it. It just goes to show you how well known and important this man was and still is. There are not too many geniuses out there but I'm so thankful there are at least a hand full of them to create what they create and improve all of our lives on a daily basis.
